Fresh Snowfall Ignites Skiing Boom in Munsyari

(Pithoragarh/Munsyari): Recent heavy snowfall has transformed Munsyari, the picturesque “Little Kashmir” of Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district, into a thriving hub for skiing and winter tourism. Nestled at an elevation of around 2,200 meters with stunning views of the Panchachuli peaks, this border town is drawing adventure enthusiasts and families alike, offering slopes that rival the famed Auli resort.

Key skiing spots like Betuli Dhar (just 7 km from Munsyari market on the Thal-Munsyari road), Khaliya Top, and Dandadhar have accumulated 2-5 feet of snow this season, enabling thrilling runs even with moderate accumulation. Unlike Auli’s year-round glacier, Munsyari relies on seasonal snowfall (typically December-March), but recent storms have ensured excellent conditions, with 2 feet sufficient for safe skiing at Betuli Dhar.

Local initiatives are fueling the surge: The Johar Club has organized skiing training for youth this year, building on past efforts by Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN). A new ski-training camp is set to begin imminently, as per district officials, aiming to skill locals and promote sustainable tourism. “Munsyari has immense potential for winter sports beyond skiing—mountaineering, rock climbing, and more,” said local trekking operator and instructor Narendra Kumar. “With government support, Khaliya Top could become an international skiing destination.”

The boom is boosting the local economy, benefiting hotels, homestays, taxi operators, and artisans selling regional products. Residents note that consistent winter activities will attract year-round tourists, creating jobs for youth. Despite climate change causing delayed or reduced snowfall in recent years, 2026’s early and ample precipitation has sparked optimism.

Uttarakhand Tourism continues to position Munsyari as a key offbeat destination, aligning with state plans for heli-skiing and adventure rallies. As pristine slopes and Himalayan vistas beckon, Munsyari is poised to shine as India’s next premier skiing paradise.
