DEHRADUN — In a major strategic push to elevate its tourism sector to unprecedented heights, the Uttarakhand government is rapidly accelerating the expansion of its seaplane services across the state. Following the highly successful trial landings of seaplanes at the Rishikesh barrage and the picturesque Tehri lake, the state administration is now actively preparing to extend this ambitious aviation initiative to other prominent water bodies in the Himalayan region.
To realize this vision, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has officially identified several new potential sites for future seaplane operations. These newly shortlisted locations include the Nanak Sagar lake in the Udham Singh Nagar district, the Haripur reservoir, and the ecologically rich Kalagarh lake located in the Pauri Garhwal district. Aviation authorities and state officials are now gearing up to conduct comprehensive trial landings at these sites to assess their technical viability for regular commercial seaplane flights.
The state government has been meticulously working on the seaplane operational plan for an extended period, with initial proposals heavily focused on the massive Tehri lake. After a prolonged wait and extensive logistical planning, the much-anticipated first successful trial landing of a seaplane was finally executed at the Rishikesh barrage on the sacred Ganges. Shortly thereafter, another successful landing was conducted at the Tehri lake, marking a significant milestone in the state’s civil aviation and tourism infrastructure development.
Building on these initial successes, the government is now advancing the previously proposed ‘Seaplane Circuit’ project. This strategic network is designed to provide seamless, time-saving connectivity to the state’s remote and otherwise hard-to-reach tourist destinations. By integrating seaplanes into the local transit ecosystem, tourists will be offered a thrilling, scenic, and luxurious travel experience above the Himalayas.
Officials believe that the development of a comprehensive seaplane circuit will significantly enhance the state’s adventure and nature-based tourism profile. Furthermore, the initiative is expected to generate substantial local employment opportunities across aviation, hospitality, and allied sectors, accelerate tourism-related activities, and drive robust economic development in the surrounding hinterlands. The DGCA’s involvement ensures that all operations will strictly adhere to national safety and environmental standards, a crucial factor for preserving the fragile Himalayan ecology.
Elaborating on the execution strategy, Sanjay Tolia, Additional Chief Executive Officer of the Uttarakhand Urban Development Authority (UKUDA), outlined the government’s carefully planned phased approach.
“Following the successful trials at Tehri and Rishikesh, our immediate plan is to commence regular seaplane operations at these two premier locations,” Tolia stated. He added, “Once we achieve operational success and establish a smooth, safe routine at these sites, we will aggressively move forward with developing the complete seaplane circuit across all the identified water bodies.”
As Uttarakhand continues to diversify its tourism offerings beyond traditional pilgrimage and trekking routes, the seaplane circuit represents a transformative leap forward. By leveraging its abundant natural water resources and breathtaking landscapes, the state aims to carve a distinct niche in the global luxury and adventure travel market, ensuring sustainable economic growth for its citizens.
