Niti Xtreme Ultra Run 2026: Thrill Meets Endurance

Published on

Dehradun: Nestled in the lap of the mighty Himalayas, Niti Valley in Chamoli district is all set to become a prominent centre for adventure tourism in Uttarakhand. After the successful Adi Kailash Ultra Marathon, the Uttarakhand Tourism Department is organising the Niti Extreme Ultra Run 2026 for the first time in this border valley. The grand event, themed “Beyond the Canyon”, will be held from 31 May to 2 June 2026.

The event will witness active participation and support from the Indian Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). It is expected to strengthen Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Border Area Development vision and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s mission for rural self-employment and livelihood generation, while giving border villages a new identity and economic prosperity.

Niti Valley is one of the most spectacular places on Earth, where nature has created a masterpiece. Towering peaks, vast glaciers, dramatic Grand Canyon-like gorges, lush green meadows, and traditional villages make this valley truly unique. The highest point of the race, Rimkhim, is situated at an elevation of 4,384 metres.

Runners will face extreme challenges including low oxygen levels, freezing cold winds, rugged trails, and high-altitude difficulties. The Niti Extreme Ultra Run will become the 6th highest ultra-marathon in the world and the 4th highest in India.

The 75 km Ultra Run will start from Rimkhim and pass through Sumna, the Grand Canyon stretch, and Malari before finishing at Niti village. The 42 km Marathon will be conducted as a loop in Niti. A major portion of the route lies above 3,000 metres, testing not only the physical strength but also the mental toughness of the participants.

So far, 908 runners have registered from 27 Indian states and two foreign countries. Medical check-ups are mandatory for all participants. A full medical team, support stations, and emergency helicopter services will be available throughout the event. The ITBP and Indian Army are providing crucial security and logistical support.

Since the announcement of the ultra marathon in January 2026, local infrastructure has witnessed a remarkable transformation. In just four months, the number of registered homestays in Niti Valley has surged from 35 rooms to more than 265 rooms, with bed capacity crossing 630. Local residents have enthusiastically started converting their traditional homes into attractive homestays. New employment opportunities have been generated in local cuisine, guiding, transportation, handicrafts, and cultural programmes. Youth are now opting for self-employment within the village instead of migrating.

Niti Valley, which remained neglected after the 1962 war, is now seeing significant development. Despite having attractions like Dronagiri Trekking, Timmar Sain Mahadev, and the upcoming Badrinath site, the valley was largely off the tourist map. Events like the Niti Extreme Ultra Run are effectively branding the region. The Uttarakhand government is also planning to send a proposal to the Centre for abolishing the Inner Line Permit for foreign tourists to boost international arrivals.

The valley is equally rich in cultural heritage. Local folk dances, traditional music, and Himalayan cuisine will attract visitors. Cultural programmes featuring local artists will be organised during the event.

Tourism Secretary Dhiraj Garbyal said, “This is not merely a sporting event. It is part of our broader strategy to establish Uttarakhand as an international hub for adventure tourism. The arrival of tourists in remote areas will provide wide-ranging benefits to homestays, hotels, guides, transport operators, and the handicraft industry.”

Organisers have made comprehensive preparations keeping in mind the challenges of high altitude. Participants will receive special training and medicines to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Support stations will be equipped with oxygen, water, energy-rich food, and medical facilities. The event will strictly follow the “Leave No Trace” principle to preserve the pristine beauty of the valley.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated: “Our Uttarakhand’s 25-year journey has been one of sacrifice, struggle, and construction. This mountainous state has never lost its patience in the face of natural calamities, migration challenges, or limited resources. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi says — ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas.’ The Niti Extreme Ultra Run is a practical expression of this philosophy, where tribal communities, women, border villagers, and the youth of Uttarakhand are together creating history.

The torch that is being lit today will burn with equal brightness on 31 May at 4,384 metres in the rugged valleys of Niti. This is not just the torch of a race — it is the torch of Uttarakhand’s renaissance and of Niti village, which was neglected since 1962 and is now set to become the pride of India under Prime Minister Modi’s Vibrant Village Programme.”

Local Voices: Tremendous Excitement Among Residents

Smt. Laxmi Devi Rana, Gram Pradhan, Niti Village said: “Earlier, very few tourists used to come here, but since the announcement of the Niti Extreme Ultra Run, everything has changed.
