Pithoragarh (Mohan Bhulani): In a spectacular display of human endurance and Himalayan spirit, an extraordinary ultra marathon unfolded today in the sacred Adi Kailash region of Pithoragarh district, symbolizing courage against the backdrop of towering heights, biting cold, and unrelenting challenges. Held at altitudes exceeding 14,000 feet in sub-zero temperatures dipping to minus 7 degrees Celsius, this event united daring athletes from across India and the world. Over 800 participants, ranging from 20 to 65 years old, braved the elements, turning the race into more than a physical test—it became a profound message of mental resilience and respect for nature.

The grand inauguration was led by Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Ajay Tamta. Addressing the gathering, he remarked, “Organized on the hallowed grounds of the world-renowned Adi Kailash peak, this is India’s first high-altitude Himalayan ultra marathon (between 10,300 and 15,000 feet), not just a symbol of thrill and bravery, but an inspiring campaign promoting healthy living, youth empowerment, and border area development.” His words ignited enthusiasm among the thousands present, underscoring how Uttarakhand’s Silver Jubilee celebrations are positioning the state firmly on the global tourism map. Revered as a manifestation of Lord Shiva, Adi Kailash blended spiritual aura with natural splendor, creating an unparalleled fusion during these trials.

As part of Uttarakhand’s 25th statehood anniversary festivities, the Silver Jubilee year is alive with cultural, sporting, and tourism events that highlight the state’s rich heritage while accelerating development in remote border regions. This marathon, a highlight in the series, aimed to boost ‘Vibrant Village Border Adventure Tourism’ and spread the ‘Say No to Drugs’ message far and wide. The 800-strong contingent from across the nation didn’t just showcase their stamina; they played a pivotal role in redefining the border area’s identity. Many athletes shared poignant reflections: running in the Himalayas felt like a form of penance. One young runner said, “The crisp mountain air and soaring peaks connect us to life’s battles.” Local Vyasa Valley communities were empowered too, with residents volunteering and fostering a sense of shared pride.

The race route started from aadi kailsh to Gunji, round through Kalapani, and looped back to Gunji, covering a grueling 60 kilometers over icy rocks, high passes, and gusty winds. Yet, the participants’ zeal was infectious—children, women, and seniors alike pressed on with smiles, undeterred. This initiative is a milestone for promoting tourism in Pithoragarh’s border zones, bolstering homestays and the local economy.

Nodal officer Utkrash highlighted the meticulous preparations: “Special arrangements were made for all. Athletes from 22 states participated.” Souvenirs included sacred soil from Adi Kailash, local stones, water from Parvati Kund, a stunning painting, and handicrafts. Traditional hill delicacies like aloo gutke, kadhai chawal, and gahun ki roti were served, offering a taste of the region’s flavors.

Tourism Secretary, Dhiraaj Garbyal, celebrated the state’s pioneering high-altitude ultra marathon as a luminous gateway ushering in an exhilarating era of adventure tourism. In his glowing remarks, Garbyal illuminated yet another facet: its synergy with bolstering winter escapades, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s impassioned exhortation during his enchanting sojourn to Harsil, where he envisioned the snow-draped Himalayan hills as irresistible winter havens.

Dhiraaj Garbyal showered effusive accolades on Sanjay Gunjyal, IG. ITBP and his indomitable team. “This colossal spectacle would have remained a distant dream without the ITBP’s steadfast pillar of support,” he declared, crediting their heroic orchestration across the unforgiving alpine expanses. As echoes of triumph reverberate through the peaks, this marathon not only conquers human limits but etches an indelible trail for Uttarakhand’s ascent as a Himalayan odyssey for the bold.

Attractive prizes await the victors. In the 60 km open category, top male and female finishers will receive Rs 2 lakh each, with the top five earning Rs 2 lakh, 1.25 lakh, 75,000, 65,000, and 45,000 respectively. Similar cash rewards totaling lakhs will be distributed across age groups and categories, motivating future champions.

Such events will continue, with plans for another ultra marathon above Kedarnath at the Indo-China border in Niti Mana next May-June—the second-highest peak in Garhwal after Kumaon’s. This promises to elevate Himalayan tourism to new heights.

More than a sporting spectacle, this marathon embodies Uttarakhand’s Silver Jubilee: a narrative of valor, unity, and progress, inspiring generations to come.
