National Recognition for Uttarakhand’s Chaugarkha Goat Breed

New Delhi: The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, has officially recognized the Chaugarkha goat breed from Uttarakhand as a distinct breed. In a significant achievement, the central government has issued a gazette notification, granting national recognition to the Chaugarkha goat. This milestone is a moment of pride for Uttarakhand’s animal husbandry and agricultural sectors.

Pantnagar University has been diligently engaged in research to secure national recognition for this unique goat breed found in Uttarakhand. The relentless efforts of the university’s scientists, coupled with the approval from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBAGR), have culminated in the issuance of this gazette. This accomplishment marks a significant milestone for local livestock farmers and researchers in Uttarakhand.

The Chaugarkha goat is predominantly found in the Bainsiya Chhana, Dhauladevi, Dhaulchina, Naugaon, and Lamgada areas of Almora district, as well as in the neighboring districts of Bageshwar and Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand. This breed is well-adapted to temperate climates and is relatively small in size. Primarily reared for meat production, the average weight of a Chaugarkha goat can reach up to 40 kilograms. The breeding tract of this breed spans from Chitai to the Daniya region of Almora’s Chaugarkha Patti, which is the basis for its name, “Chaugarkha.”

Currently, Pantnagar University and the Uttarakhand Animal Husbandry Department are collaborating on research initiatives for the conservation and development of the Chaugarkha goat. To preserve the purity of this breed and enhance its productivity, approximately 170 Chaugarkha goats are being conserved at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Mukteshwar. Scientists are continuously working to improve the breed’s production and reproductive capabilities. Plans for expanding the breed’s reach will be developed based on positive research outcomes.

Expressing delight over this achievement, Uttarakhand’s Animal Husbandry Secretary, B.V.R.C. Purushottam, stated, “It is a matter of pride for Uttarakhand that the Chaugarkha goat has received national recognition. The Animal Husbandry Department will work with greater vigor to ensure the conservation and improvement of this breed.” He extended his congratulations to all scientists and livestock farmers who contributed to this milestone.

Future Prospects

The national recognition of the Chaugarkha goat will not only create new economic opportunities for livestock farmers in Uttarakhand but also play a pivotal role in the conservation and promotion of this breed. This step is a significant initiative toward empowering local communities and strengthening the rural economy.
